Licensing

Every MX, Secure Router (MX OS), vMX and Z device needs a licence to run; the licence includes Meraki dashboard management, firmware and security updates, 24x7 Meraki support and, for Meraki-branded hardware, the lifetime warranty with advance replacement. A device stops working if its licence lapses (30-day grace). Three licensing models exist and an organisation uses one: (1) Co-termination: model-specific licences (e.g. LIC-MX68-SEC-3YR) that all end on one shared date for the organisation; the MX tier (Enterprise, Advanced Security or Secure SD-WAN Plus) is set organisation-wide, except that an Advanced Security organisation can upgrade individual networks with per-device SD-WAN Plus licences (LIC-MX-SDW-S/M/L/XL-1Y/3Y/5Y). (2) Per-device licensing (PDL): the same model-specific SKUs, but each licence is tied to one device with its own end date, so tiers can be mixed per device (per-device SD-WAN Plus upgrades are not used in PDL). (3) Subscription: hardware-agnostic class SKUs (LIC-MX-S/M/L/XL, LIC-CSR-S/M/L/XL, LIC-Z) in Essentials (-E) or Advantage (-A), bought as a subscription with a term chosen at order (1 to 10 years); co-term and subscription cannot be mixed in one dashboard organisation. Licences are model-specific and not transferable between models; existing MX licences do not transfer to the Cisco 8000 Secure Routers. A warm-spare HA pair needs one licence. SKU suffixes: Meraki's older hardware generation (MX64-MX68 family, MX84, MX250, MX450, Z3) uses '-1YR/-3YR...' for Enterprise and Advanced Security, while SD-WAN Plus and the newer MX75/85/95/105, vMX, Z4 and Cisco 8000 MX licences use '-1Y/-3Y...'. Cisco's Sep 2026 MX datasheet prints every SKU with '-Y'; where that conflicts with Cisco's own catalogue we use the catalogue form and say so.
